Rallies are being held in Los Angeles Monday to commemorate International Workers’ Day, also known as “May Day.”

The demonstrations are meant to honor the contributions of everyday, working class people, as well as the American labor movement dating back to 19th Century. Demonstrators in Chinatown on Monday said they were also marching for better pay and working conditions.

May Day is celebrated as an official holiday in 66 countries with rallies held nationwide.

Locally, rallies were held in downtown L.A., Little Tokyo, Boyle Heights and the Inland Empire. In Riverside, more than 30 community groups united together to fight for labor, immigrant rights and environmental justice.

Organizers of the events say it is important to fight for government reform all the way to the federal level and that they hope Congress and President Joe Biden will hear their demands.
