Diablo 4: Resource Draining Effects Explained
For the vast majority of Diablo 4, there is no mention of Resource Draining effects, and even the mention of them may be a surprise with the arrival of Season 1 in the game. The effects still aren’t too prevalent for most players, but I’ll give you a quick rundown on what they mean for the late game.
What are Resource Draining Effects in Diablo 4?
Resource Draining effects are Affixes found in Nightmare Dungeons that will continuously drain your primary resource over time. Whether it’s the Spirit resource for the Druid, or mana on the Sorcerer, these will be drained in an attempt to make the dungeon much more difficult. Characters based on heavy resource management will have a tough time getting through these.
Enemies themselves don’t typically have any Resource Draining effects, which is why most players will likely never encounter the effects in Diablo 4, unless it’s an incredibly rare ability from an elite. However, many players may be wondering about the effect due to the addition of Caged Hearts in Season 1.
One of the global Malignant Hearts is the Determination Caged Heart. This heart is based on negating Resource Draining effects by nearly 50%. That sounds great, but it’s really only useful in a Nightmare Dungeon. But there are two different effects on the Determination heart.

If you decide you want to look for the heart anyway, the bonuses are fairly simple. “Resource draining effects are 40-50% less effective. In addition, gain 3.0-8.0% increased Resource Generation.” Aside from the drain, having that passive regeneration stat is good on its own for nearly any build in Diablo 4.
That’s our explanation of Resource Draining Effects in Diablo 4. Caged Hearts can get fairly complicated, so make sure to read through my guide on the hearts in Diablo 4 Season 1.
