The UConn men's basketball team has dipped into the City of Brotherly Love for its second Class of 2024 commitment.
Ahmad Nowell, a tough, Philadelphia-area combo guard, announced Sunday that he has committed to the Huskies.
Nowell, who is 6-foot, 180 pounds, is the No. 36 overall 2024 prospect in the nation, per 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He chose UConn over Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Nowell, who is originally from Tennessee, helped lead Philly's Imhotep Charter to its second straight 5A Pennsylvania state title this past season, along with national top-5 recruit and Kentucky commit Justin Edwards. He played for Team Final on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer.
Nowell was the first 2024 recruit that UConn offered coming off its national championship in April.
"From an evaluator’s perspective, Nowell is fun to track, because he keeps adding new weapons and getting better at every step," wrote 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein. "Offensively, he’s put the time in to keep taking his shooting to new levels. He’s also gone from more of a volume shot-taker to a much more willing passer and consequently efficient offensive player. He’s also bringing that same alpha dog mentality to the defensive end of the floor and asserting himself as someone who can change the game with his ability to pressure the ball on that end of the floor."
Nowell is the second commit from the Class of 2024, following Virginia combo forward Isaiah Abraham. Ranked 74th overall by 247Sports.com, Abraham picked UConn over Marquette, Providence and Virginia Tech.
In Nowell, UConn is getting a player who excels at both ends of the floor.
"UConn fans are getting a hard-working (player), somebody that is going to go out there everyday and shed his blood, sweat, and tears," Nowell said after making his announcement on a 247Sports livestream.
Accoding to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Kentucky coach John Calipari gave Nowell high praise when he offered scholarship in person.
“He talked about the things that he loved about me, like my defense, how hard I played, how I played on offense, like my decision-making and my shot-making,” Nowell said to the Inquirer. “Just talking about all the things he’s seen within my game.”
