Travis Kelce comments on Kadarius Toney, Chiefs receiver corps
The second day of full team training camp saw many great plays made by the Kansas City Chiefs’ young offensive talent. The early weather concerns at the Missouri Western State University campus didn’t slow down the action on the field, with competition picking up in earnest by the end of Monday’s workouts.
The Chiefs have been led offensively in recent years by the duo of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but the unit has multiple options to rely on heading into the 2023 season. One of the many up-and-coming players on the roster is wide receiver Kadarius Toney who is dealing with a knee injury early at camp. Toney was a vital part of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run last season according to Kelce, who spoke with reporters following Monday’s practice.
“Just electric man, he’s just a high-energy guy,” Kelce explained of Toney. “When he gets the ball, he’s flying around. He’s a hard worker. We’re gonna miss KT’s just, you know, his ability to make a play out of nowhere. And just, you know, kind of gain that momentum. He was that piece for us in the Super Bowl. He was that piece for us throughout the season last year.”
Toney has had a history of injury issues since being drafted by the New York Giants in 2021, so Kansas City was wise to stock up on receivers in the offseason. Later in his comments, Kelce highlighted the other young pass catchers at quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ disposal who put their abilities on full display during Monday’s practice.
“I’m excited about every young guy that we got here, and there’s no, you know, let’s wait until this guy develops,” Kelce said. “These guys are ready right now, and you see them flying out there. Rashee (Rice) had a bunch of great plays today, Noah Gray had a great day to day, Skyy Moore had about three or four touchdowns and some great plays, so all in terms of the young talent we have here it’s just guys are ready to play because they’re putting their nose to the grind and just getting after it man they’re just getting after it.”
The Chiefs have not announced the nature of Toney’s injury, but there is optimism that he can return soon. The plethora of young receivers on Kansas City’s roster has helped calm the uncertainty of Toney’s early loss, though Kelce certainly seemed to hope that the electric receiver would be back in short order.
