A Brazilian soccer fan has been arrested in connection with the murder of a young woman who died after she was struck with a bottle on the neck outside a stadium.

Jonathan Santos was taken into custody in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, the Civil Police of São Paulo announced.

He was identified via cameras and facial recognition system outside Allianz Parque in São Paulo as the fan who threw the glass bottle that hit Gabriela Anelli, 23, while she was waiting to enter the stadium on July 8.

Santos, a fan of the visiting Flamengo side, was reportedly involved in a fight with Palmeiras fans moments hours before the clubs were set to meet in a Brazilian Men's Football Championship match.

Footage shows Santos being restrained by a person before he grabbed a green bottle and hurled it towards the gate that cops were attempting to close while also keep the rival fans from getting at each other.

The bottle pierced a jugular vein in Anelli's neck and a camera showed one of her friends aiding her while she sat on the ground after she was hit.

Paramedics rushed her to Santa Casa Hospital, where she underwent surgery the night of the incident and then died after suffering two heart attacks July 10.

Authorities initially arrested Leonardo Santiago, also a Flamengo man, on the spot.

He was released July 12 after investigators analyzed video and determined that he was not the bearded person wearing a grey shirt who had thrown the bottle.

Santos then changed his shirt for a red-black version, the Flamengo colors, and entered the stadium.

Gabriela Anelli enjoyed traveling to watch her favorite Brazilian soccer team, Palmeiras, and once held a raffle to raise money to cover the cost of seeing them play in person in Paraguay

Anelli grew up attanding Palmeiras home matches with her parents at the team's stadium in Sao Paolo

São Paulo Civil Police chief César Saad said a press conference Tuesday morning that investigators were able to scan cameras that allowed them to identify their suspect

'We identify when he arrives, when he leaves, when he changes clothes, when he comes in to watch the game,' Saad said.

Santos is expected to be extradited to São Paulo on Tuesday.

Friends and family said Anelli was a longtime Palmeiras fan who grew up as a child attending games with her parents.

Instead of attending funk and country music parties, the young woman enjoyed catching a soccer game in person - once raising funds to travel for a match in Paraguay.

'This was practically her fun. She took trips on weekends. It was the way she found herself,' her father Ettore Marchiano told TV Globo. 'She liked Palmeiras. That was her life. Palmeiras and the fans.'
