Ezekiel Elliott demonstrates his classy connection to the Cowboys with a “.good luck” camp message to successor Tony Pollard.

OXNARD, Calif. - How high-quality a teammate is Ezekiel Elliott? So high-quality that he’s a good teammate even as he’s not longer a member of the team.

"Just telling all the running backs,” Tony Pollard said from here at Dallas Cowboys training camp, revealing that Elliott texted the new leader of the running backs room, “that he knows we'll handle business, take care of everything and just good luck.”

This is newsworthy but not shocking, of course. Elliott is a big brother to the man replacing him as the Cowboys' lead running back in 2023. … and in some ways probably remains a spiritual sort of influence in the Dallas locker room.

Elliott remains a free agent as NFL training camps get underway. While he is obviously viewed as a faded talent, his 12 TDs for the Cowboys in 2022 should serve as a reminder of what he can contribute to a team that decides it has a need.

In the meantime, Zeke has continued working out in Frisco, often with his former Cowboys teammates, including best friend Dak Prescott, the Cowboys quarterback.

Dallas is moving on with Pollard getting paid a guaranteed one-year contract worth $10.1 million as a result of him bring franchise tagged. He’ll be looking to build on his Pro Bowl effort of 2022 when he rushed for 1,007 yards while catching 39 passes for 371 yards and totaling 12 touchdowns.

But Elliott put down the groundwork for what the Dallas running game can do. And obviously his presence is still felt here at camp.

“It means a lot with his situation, not being anywhere, but him still checking on us and making sure we're all right,” Pollard said, adding that while Zeke is thinking of his buddies, the feeling is mutual. ""I know (being unemployed) is frustrating for him … But I know he's a tough guy mentally and physically, so I'm pretty sure he'll find a way to battle through this.”
