Cubs Lineup vs Cardinals

The Cubs have a chance to move back to .500 for the first time since May 12, when they were 19-19. If they do accomplish that tonight, it’ll be pretty historic relative to franchise history (given the depths to which they sank). Of course, they already had one chance to get back to .500 earlier this season against these very Cardinals, but things fell apart the moment a ball dropped out of Trey Mancini’s glove. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, let’s hope for some better luck tonight! Here’s the Cubs lineup for the first of four games against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Mike Tauchman, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Cody Bellinger, 1B Seiya Suzuki, RF Dansby Swanson, SS Chris Morel, DH Yan Gomes, C Miles Mastrobuoni, 3B

This is the standard versus righties Cubs lineup here lately, and it’s working. In a vacuum, you’d love to have Bellinger’s glove in center field and maybe more opportunities or Miguel Amaya. But in reality, this group does make sense as is.

And, hey, for what it’s worth, Mastrobuoni has nine hits in his last six games, including a homer, and two stolen bases, against just three strikeouts. It’s been a nice stretch!

St. Louis Cardinals Lineup:

Brendan Donovan, DH Paul Goldschimdt, 1B Nolan Arenado, 3B Willson Contreras, C Tyler O’Neill, LF Jordan Walker, RF Nolan Gorman, 2B Dylan Carlson, CF Taylor Motter, SS

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Justin Steele, LHP

Justin Steele’s last start came against these very Cardinals at Wrigley Field. He lasted into the seventh inning in that one, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits and one walk against NINE strikeouts. It was one of his better starts this year, so let’s hope for a repeat performance tonight.

St. Louis Cardinals: Miles Mikolas, RHP

Miles Mikolas has been having a forgettable season, including his last outing which came against the Cubs: 5.0 IP, 11H, 5ER, 1BB, 3K. A total hit fest. He faced the Cubs once earlier in the season, as well, and while he struck out seven and allowed just one earned run in that game, he lasted just 4.1 innings. Needless to say, the Cubs seem to have his number just fine this year. More of that please. As a reminder, Mikolas is not a heavy split guy, with lefties just barely out-hitting righties this season and for his career.
