Thousands without power in southern Wisconsin during Friday storms
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Tens of thousands of people in southern Wisconsin lost power Friday night as severe storms swept through the state, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and hail, as well as a wave of tornado warnings.
Over 25,000 Alliant Energy customers in Wisconsin lost power, according to the utility’s outage map. Over 13,000 of its customers in Sauk Co. alone were left without electricity in the wake of the storm, which is slightly more than half of the total number of Alliant customers in the county.
In Adams Co., that percentage was even higher with more than 2,500 of its 3,479 customers reporting outages. Columbia and Juneau counties both recorded more than 3,000 power outages each, while Monroe Co. had over 1,500, according to the map. Including its Iowa customers, Alliant Energy crews will be working to restore electricity to nearly 40,000 customers.
In the Madison-area, MG&E reported over 12,000 outages. Its outage map showed the hardest hit of its service area was the Maple Bluff-area stretching north where the combined total as of 9:45 p.m. was over 3,600 customers. As of 11:30 p.m., the utility stated on its website that it was unable to project a time that electricity would be restored.
“Our employees are currently assessing the situation and will provide an estimate of service restoration once more information is known,” MG&E wrote.
In southeast Wisconsin, We Energies reported on its outage map shortly after 11 p.m. that over 20,000 customers had lost electricity. In Fort Atkinson-area, nearly 8,000 of its customers did not have electricity, while more than 7,000 in the Racine area were experiencing outages.
Anyone experiencing a power outage is asked to call their provider to let them know.
