Enhanced Box Score: Cardinals 3, Cubs 0
I knew, logically, that the Cubs couldn’t ACTUALLY win every single game the rest of the way. The winning streak, at some point, was going to have to end. And I also knew, because I know myself, that whenever it did end, I was going to think *that particular game* was the one where it was *super annoying* that the winning streak *happened to end* that day. It’s just how I’m wired.
BUT THAT WAS TOTALLY SUPER ANNOYING THAT THE WINNING STREAK ENDED TODAY.
The Cubs were going for the sweep in St. Louis (on a Sunday on a getaway day, so I should’ve known better than to hope), heading into a series where they’ll host the Reds – whom they’re chasing – as the Trade Deadline comes and passes. It just felt like the energy was swelling, and a win today would’ve REALLY set things in motion for tomorrow and the next day.
That is to say, that sucked.
It sucked that the Cubs got dominated by Steven Matz again – despite him sucking against every other non-Cubs team in baseball this year – and it sucked that the Cubs wasted a seven-inning, three-run outing from Kyle Hendricks.
But I guess the loss had to come at some point. So I’ll just try to keep the bigger picture in mind, and remember that the Cubs are definitely still buying, right? Nothing that happened today could’ve changed that. Right?
Also, with the Cardinals selling off LITERALLY DURING this game …
