Cubs Lineup vs Reds
Cubs Lineup — The Chicago Cubs have a big series on tap, with the first-place Cincinnati Reds coming to town for four straight games at Wrigley Field. The Reds have a locked-in Andrew Abbott on the mound, and the Cubs are countering with an ice-cold Marcus Stroman. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the opener in Chicago.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Nico Hoerner, 2B Seiya Suzuki, RF Ian Happ, LF Cody Bellinger, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Yan Gomes, C Chris Morel, DH Trey Mancini, 1B Nick Madrigal, 3B
Pretty standard vs left-handed pitching lineup for the Cubs this evening. Complete with Nico Hoerner up top, Yan Gomes behind the plate, and Trey Mancini at first base. The one difference this time is that David Ross decided (wisely) to stick with Ian Happ, who sat out yesterday’s start against Cardinals lefty Steven Matz.
That decision, however, effectively pushes Miguel Amaya out of the Cubs lineup, because Chris Morel retreats to DH. Oh, and note: This is the second straight game against a left-handed starting pitcher and Patrick Wisdom hasn’t been in the Cubs lineup either time.
Cincinnati Reds Lineup:
Elly Da La Cruz, 3B TJ Friedl, CF Matt McLain, SS Jake Fraley, RF Spencer Steer, 2B Joey Votto, 1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand, DH Will Benson, LF Luke Maile, C
Pitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Marcus Stroman, RHP
It has been one baaaaaad stretch for Marcus Stroman, and we’re not talking about power-houses opponents here, either…
Stroman’s first 16 starts: 2.28 ERA (3.35 FIP)
Stroman’s last 6 starts: 8.00 ERA (4.46 FIP)
He’s going to have to figure something out against the Reds tonight, because this downturn has come at the worst possible time, no matter the Cubs intentions for him tomorrow. He hasn’t yet faced the Reds this season, which should theoretically work in his favor.
Cincinnati Reds: Andrew Abbott, LHP
Andrew Abbott has had a very good debut season for the Reds, with a 1.90 ERA through his first ten starts. He’s been especially hot his last three times out, with a combined THREE earned runs over 20.0 IP. That comes with just 11 hits, 5 walks, and 18 strikeouts. On the bright side: Abbott has allowed a lot of hard contact and let’s opposing batters elevate the ball well. Maybe the Wrigley Field winds can help the Cubs lineup put a couple into the stands tonight.
