Suspect in custody after man stabbed in chest at public restrooms along Santa Monica beach
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- One person was stabbed at the restrooms on the Santa Monica beach on Monday.
Investigators cordoned off a bloody scene at the public restrooms near Bicknell Avenue, just a few blocks south of the Santa Monica pier.
The stabbing was reported just after 2 p.m. Monday. Santa Monica police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon and found a male victim with at least one stab wound to his chest.
Officers performed first aid and CPR and firefighters transported the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
A suspect was taken into custody immediately, police say.
"it's just really sad and heartbreaking," said Tony Ferrari of Marina Del Rey.
People who spoke with ABC7 on Monday night said the public bathrooms are generally well-kept and not a place where they see much violence.
"It can be risky at times," said Ian Weiss of Santa Monica. "I'd say for the most part, though, there are nice good people but occasionally, there's trouble."
Police are still investigating a potential motive for the attack and whether the victim and suspect knew each other previously.
