Kevin Costner reportedly not returning for future seasons of ‘Yellowstone’
The drama about whether Kevin Costner will continue on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone got a little more intense Wednesday.
Entertainment Tonight, citing sources close to the show’s production, reported that Costner will not return after season 5. ET sought comment from Costner and the show’s representatives without success.
Costner stars in the show as John Dutton, the head of a powerful Montana cattle-ranching family. Sheridan, a Weatherford resident who grew up in Fort Worth, created the show.

The news came a day after ET reported Costner’s wife, Christine Costner, had filed for divorce.
Since February, observers have tried to discern whether Costner, an Academy Award-winning veteran actor, would leave the Paramount Network show. The network was reportedly planning to end the series because Costner’s availability had changed over the past five years. Costner’s attorney has denied that assertion. Sheridan has been mum.
A month ago, Sheridan and Costner were no-shows at PaleyFest, an annual fan event hosted by the Paley Center for Media in Hollywood, Calif.
It’s not known whether Matthew McConaughey will be coming off the bench to take Costner’s place.
In March, Chris McCarthy, CEO and president of Paramount Media Networks, told The Hollywood Reporter that McConaughey was lined up to star in a Yellowstone extension.
Season 5 of Yellowstone premiered in Fort Worth in November. Later in November, Paramount Network crews took over the Johnston County town of Venus to film a scene for an upcoming episode. The show’s mid-season finale aired at the beginning of the year, and it’s unclear whether the Writers Guild of America strike will affect the series.
Cole Hauser, who joined Sheridan in an autograph session at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo in February, was asked whether Dutton’s character would meet his end.
“I’m not the man to ask, but listen, you never know,” Hauser said. “Taylor is one of those kinds of writers where you never know what’s coming. I love that about him.”
