THURSDAY PUZZLE — Some crosswords serve as great reminders that humility is a virtue, and I would say that David J. Kahn’s puzzle fits that bill. Sure, there will be people for whom solving was easily, and they set a new personal speed record in terms of speed, plus they did the whole thing blindfolded. I sincerely congratulate them on this achievement, and encourage the rest of you to keep your eyes on your own paper. You’ll be a lot happier. Trust me on this.
For some of us, solving a puzzle like Mr. Kahn’s may require extra processing time. Some people are just starting to solve Thursday-level puzzles and don’t have the same level of experience as others do. We may be left with a semiblank grid even after staring at it for what feels like forever.
But then you turn your attention to the revealer for the umpteenth time, and suddenly the theme reveals itself to you.
There’s a word for that phenomenon. If only I could remember its name.
Today’s Theme
There are six theme entries in Mr. Kahn’s crossword, and I’m pretty sure that as you filled in each one, you were puzzled. (Sorry!) The answers don’t match the clues, a sign that there is trickery afoot.
