The Chicago Cubs are undefeated in the Matt Mervis era. Just saying. Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup for Game 2 against the Marlins at Wrigley Field.

One nice thing about having Matt Mervis in the Cubs lineup? You can give your best power hitter, Patrick Wisdom, a day off and not lose too much potential thump in your lineup!
Indeed, Nick Madrigal gets the nod at third base today, and Tucker Barnhart slides back in for Miguel Amaya. It’s not as fun of a lineup as yesterday, but these are two reasonable substitutions.
The Cubs were supposed to be facing Bryan Hoeing today, but he’s been scratched. It’ll be a bullpen day for the Marlins. More info below.

Chicago Cubs: Drew Smyly, LHP
If it wasn’t for Marcus Stroman and Justin Steele, Drew Smyly would be THE story of the Cubs pitching staff this season. He probably could be, anyway. After a rough first game against the Reds, Smyly has been absolutely lights out, including that near perfect game. In his last five outings, he’s averaging just over 6.0 IP per start with a 1.48 ERA. How is he doing it? Well, he’s netted his fair share of strikeouts (23.6%), but it really comes down to limiting walks (3.6 BB%) and managing contact (85.4 average exit velocity). Opposing batters have been able to elevate against Smyly a little, but again the contact has been weak. The Marlins didn’t see Smyly last weekend, so advantage him.

Miami Marlins: Bullpen Game.
Bryan Hoeing was supposed to start against the Cubs today, but he’s been scratched. So I t’ll be a bullpen day for Miami, beginning with Matt Barnes and eventually Chi Chi Gonzalez. That’s probably good news for the Cubs, as Hoeing held the Cubs to just two runs over 5.0 innings of work last weekend. Seeing the same guy twice in short order is a good thing, yes, but Hoeing’s got some real pitches. This sinker netted 3 of his 11 whiffs from the Cubs lineup in just those 5.0 innings.
