“I liked and still like feeling independent,” Rivky says. Because of this, Rivky could be found using her arms to carry herself around school hallways, climb stairs, and even hop onto the couch.
I could be walking through the hallway using my hands or spinning the wheels of my wheelchair, and students would stare. Sometimes they’d look scared, some would be confused, and some surprised. What does a surprised person do? They keep staring. I became self-conscious walking through the hallways because of it. I felt awkward.”
“The more people stared, the more I wanted to run out of the hall. The more those thoughts engulfed me, I also repeated to myself, ‘This is me and I should be proud of who I am and how far I have come.’
