NYPD rolling out sleek and speedy electric patrol cars for the first time
NYPD Blue is getting greener.
New York’s Finest have rolled out a fleet of fully electric patrol cars for the first time — with two dozen sleek, charged-up Ford Mustang Mach-E GTs already on patrol in the Big Apple.
In all, the NYPD has purchased 100 of the marked muscle cars that will eventually be zipping across the five boroughs.
“Our officers are put to the test every day and we know they are up to the challenged,” First Deputy Commissioner Edward Caban told The Post. “We must ensure the vehicles they are driving can hold up as well.
“Public safety is more than just protecting our streets,” Caban added. “It’s protecting our environment, and this pilot program is in lockstep with Mayor [Eric] Adams’ mandate to significantly reduce harmful emissions across the entire municipal fleet.”
The department already has hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles on the road, but the new cars are the first fully-electric vehicles in the NYPD’s fleet, officials said.
The Mustangs are actually now the fastest vehicles in the force’s arsenal, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds.

Their low center of gravity reduces the chance for roll-overs and allows for upgraded maneuvering, with heavy-duty brakes.
The new cars are also not likely to run out of juice on the job — they carry a range of 270 miles on a fully charged battery, with the city working on adding charging stations throughout the Big Apple.
The response from city cops has thus far been positive, the department said.
So far, 10 precincts have been using the vehicles, including in Central Park, along with precincts in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, with each command utilizing at least two cars each.

Adams has been angling to make the five boroughs more environmentally friendly by cutting back on gas-guzzling vehicles in the city’s fleet. Last year, the city also announced a $4 billion schools plan to dump oil-burning furnaces in city schools and replace them with cleaner electric models.
The Post reported last year that the city spent more than $108 million over the prior year on fuel to rev up the nation’s largest municipal fleet of vehicles – a whopping 58 percent increase over the year before.
