San Francisco North Beach mass shooting leaves 1 dead, 4 injured
San Francisco police were investigating a shooting that killed one person and left four others injured in the city’s North Beach neighborhood Sunday night.
A San Francisco Police Department official tweeted that the shooting occurred near Columbus Avenue and Broadway shortly before 11 p.m.
Police said they arrived to find a 23-year-old man from Solano County suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers found two wounded victims nearby, both 24-year-old men from Sacramento County, whom they treated with emergency aid and took to a hospital. Two more injured victims, a 22-year-old man from Alameda County and a 20-year-old woman from Contra Costa County, were taken to hospitals before police arrived. The four people wounded were expected to survive, police said.
“At this time, investigators believe this is an isolated incident and do not believe this shooting was random,” representatives of the Police Department said in a statement on Monday afternoon. Detectives with the department’s homicide detail are leading the investigation.
Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, whose district includes North Beach, said his phone began buzzing after 10:30 p.m. as neighbors frantically relayed details and pictures of the crime scene.
“I’m horrified that the calm, lovely neighborhood of North Beach has experienced an active shooting,” Peskin said, noting that police are pursuing leads. The people involved in the incident appear to know each other, according to Peskin. He noted that none are San Francisco residents.
“This is deeply troubling and I believe we will learn more in the hours ahead as police are pursuing leads,” the supervisor said.
