Anthony Davis wheeled off but reportedly not concussed in Warriors win
The Lakers appeared to narrowly avoid their nightmare scenario on Wednesday night.
The Warriors manhandled them 121-106 in Game 5, and for a few minutes, the outlook for Game 6 looked grim. Anthony Davis left the game midway through the fourth quarter after getting brained by a Kevon Looney forearm. Then an ugly scene played out, as Davis winced in pain on the sideline for several minutes before woozily departing for the locker room.
The TNT broadcast reported that he eventually required a wheelchair to get where he was going.
Davis did not return to the game and was checked for a head injury. Initial reports from the Lakers’ locker room, though, were overwhelmingly positive. Head coach Darvin Ham was upbeat about Davis after the loss. “He took a shot to the head. He seems to be doing really good already,” Ham told reporters. “That’s where he’s at and the status of it right now.”
Word quickly got out that Davis is supposedly not concussed. “Early diagnosis indicates Anthony Davis appears to have avoided a concussion and is doing much better now,” TNT’s Chris Haynes reported not long after the game.
Lakers players were optimistic after seeing Davis in the locker room. Austin Reaves said he believes Davis will play in Game 6 on Friday, and LeBron James said that “the medical team said he’s doing better.”
Whatever the status of Davis, James didn’t get out of Game 5 unscathed. The game was too competitive for Ham to hoist the white flag until there were under three minutes left, meaning James played a relatively taxing 39 minutes. He also came up limping after scoring a basket at the end of the third quarter, though he stayed in for his usual rotations until Ham yanked the starters with the game out of reach late. (James has been hindered by a foot injury for most of this postseason.)
Game 6 is Friday at 7 p.m. in Los Angeles.
