The Little Mermaid Swims to a $117.5 Million Memorial Day Weekend Box Office Victory
The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has earned the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend opening of all time by bringing in $117.5 million in its first four days in theaters in North America.
As reported by Comscore, The Little Mermaid had a $95.4 million domestic and $68.2 million international 3-day weekend haul and its global total now sits at $185.8 million.
For comparison, the original animated The Little Mermaid opened to $6.03 million domestically in 1989 and had a global theatrical run of $211.34 million. Obviously, the box office is a much different place now, but it's an interesting comparison nonetheless via Box Office Mojo.
The Little Mermaid also is currently sitting at fifth place on the list of the best domestic openings for Disney's live-action remakes, and failed to surpass The Jungle Book ($103.26 million), Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million), Beauty and the Beast ($174.01 million), and The Lion King ($191.7 million).
In our The Little Mermaid review, we said, "Full of heart and led by a star-making performance from Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid is an acceptable, if not always successful, adaptation of the animated original."
