What to make of Jeff Darlington's report on 49ers QB Trey Lance's first-team reps
What to make of Jeff Darlington’s report on 49ers QB Trey Lance’s first-team reps

"Trey Lance is the guy during OTAs who's been taking all the 1st-team reps; he's healthy at this point," Darlington said,
What is the takeaway from these comments? Nothing, really. We already knew Lance was receiving the bulk of the workload after OTAs kicked off last week. The 49ers started their second week of OTAs on Tuesday. While Wednesday will be the team's sixth practice, it will only be the second where reporters can observe. That is a small sample size, and we don't know what has occurred in those other practice sessions.
Lance appeared to take all of the first-team reps during last week's practice open to reporters. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was even asked about the third-year quarterback's workload and if it meant anything.
"
The coach, trying to douse water on the flames before the story got out of control, added, "And the first-team is kind of funny because there's no [offensive] line out there. Most of our receivers are second- and third-team on the first-team today, so I'm curious what everyone thinks first- and second- and third-team is."
So Darlington isn't really reporting anything we didn't already know. It makes sense for the 49ers to get a good early look at the player in which they invested several first-round draft picks, Trey Lance, first. Lance has only four NFL starts under his belt, while Darnold is more of a known commodity, having started 55 career NFL games.
Purdy started some limited throwing this week, and the 49ers are encouraged by what they saw.
"He's had one (throwing) session thus far and
The 49ers remain hopeful that Purdy might be ready for the start of the regular season. Until then, Lance and Darnold will split the practice reps, preparing to fill in during games if needed.
"We feel good about that position holistically," Lynch said. "We are not going to put Brock in a situation where he's not fully healed. That means not just get back, but get back and get in reps under your belt." ESPN's Jeff Darlington recently appeared on the network's NFL Live show and discussed the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation, highlighting Trey Lance 's healthy state and current workload during organized team activities (OTAs)."Trey Lance is the guy during OTAs who's been taking all the 1st-team reps; he's healthy at this point," Darlington said, per Dov Kleiman of BroBible . " Sam Darnold really getting backup duty as he kinda gets his playbook under his belt. But for now, Trey Lance getting his opportunity with those first-team reps."What is the takeaway from these comments? Nothing, really. Lance or Darnold could still start Week 1 if Purdy is not healthy enough to play. Late May is too early to make any concrete conclusions in what should be an intriguing quarterback competition and offseason storyline.Purdy started some limited throwing this week, and the 49ers are encouraged by what they saw."He's had one (throwing) session thus far and we're incredibly encouraged by that ," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio. 49ers OTAs: Trey Lance comments on offseason trade rumors; Shanahan on QB getting first-team reps
By David Bonilla May 23
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been pleased with what he's seen from Trey Lance during these first two organized team activities (OTAs) practices. The third-year quarterback entered last season as the team's starting quarterback. An ankle injury during Week 2 ended that. Now fully recovered, Lance is looking to prove himself to his coaches. The former No. 3 overall pick has taken all of the first-team reps during these two practices. However, Shanahan warns not to read too much into that. "It'll even out," Shanahan said. "We'll make sure to get that right." A reporter was already asking another question when Shanahan interrupted him to clear up a potential misconception about "first-team reps." "And the first-team is kind of funny because
First look at Trey Lance, Sam Darnold at 49ers OTAs

The San Francisco 49ers started organized team activities (OTAs) this week. They held their first practice on Monday. Tuesday was the first session open to the media, and reporters got glimpses of quarterbacks Trey Lance and Sam Darnold throwing, along with the rest of the team's work. Lance and Darnold are competing for that QB2 spot behind a sidelined Brock Purdy. One could even be the starting quarterback when San Francisco's regular season kicks off on September 10, assuming Purdy isn't yet available. Below are some videos from Tuesday's practice that various sources
Arik Armstead: 49ers can repeat as NFC West champs; Trey Lance has a bright future
By David Bonilla May 25
San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead joined NFL Network's Good Morning Football on Thursday to discuss the state of the team at the start of organized team activities (OTAs). Armstead is part of a defensive line that includes NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa and added former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. The question that had to be asked: Does San Francisco own the best defensive line in football? "Well, on paper, I guess you could say that, but 'on paper' doesn't win any game," Armstead responded. "But we're excited about getting together and starting that journey of
49ers insider offers analysis from glimpse of Trey Lance and Sam Darnold

It's premature to draw conclusions about a quarterback based on practices in May. That is especially true when you do so based on one practice. The San Francisco 49ers started organized team activities (OTAs) this week, and all eyes were on Trey Lance and Sam Darnold. The two players are battling for that QB2 job behind last season's rookie sensation, Brock Purdy. One could even start Week 1 if Purdy is not healthy enough to do so himself. Lance is coming off a season-ending ankle injury but looks completely healthy now. Darnold is trying to turn his career around after never living up to his high draft status. Matt Barrows of The Athletic was on hand for Tuesday's practice, the only one open to reporters so far, and one that Barrows describes as a
