Cubs vs Giants — Did I think I’d have to write a Cubs series preview for an uncompetitive Cubs team at some point this season? Yeah. I did. I thought they could compete, for sure, but I was mentally prepared for one of these to have that draining … here we go again feeling. But I did not expect it to happen this soon.
Call it blind optimism, call it foolishness, whatever. But this stinks. And it feels like the flip has switched on the Cubs. The only way out of this is a truly improbable winning streak, the type even the best Cubs teams of recent memory rarely rattled off. It’s just not going to happen, even in a terrible division.
But it’s not like I’m going to stop watching. And frankly, if you’re reading this, I’m guessing the same goes for you. So …
The Cubs are headed to San Francisco to finish off their West Coast road trip with three games against the Giants. The good news is that the Giants (32-30) aren’t great, Marcus Stroman is on the mound tonight, and this will be the last late-night game (9:15 CT) all year.
To finish this road trip at an even .500 (5-5), the Cubs will have to sweep San Francisco at their ballpark. Good luck, Cubs!
