New Valheim Update Adds One of Minecraft's Best Features
A new Valheim update is set to add one of Minecraft's best features to the Viking survival game: creative mode. As it evolves in its early access and Xbox Game Preview form, Valheim continues to be patched with fresh content, fixes, and more.
Valheim was first released in early access on PC in 2021, and it made the jump to Xbox and Game Pass in 2023. With Valheim on multiple platforms, Iron Gate Studios continues to think of new ways to improve the game. Similar to how Minecraft has evolved over the years, Valheim looks to do the same, and the addition of creative mode may be what it needs to be recognized by a broader community of PC and Xbox players.

The Valheim public test server went live shortly after the release of the survival game, and it has recently received a big update which includes what's called Hammer mode. Hammer mode is expected to be the Valheim equivalent of Minecraft's creative mode, and it comes with several modifiers to the game that will reflect the build-focused gameplay. According to the patch notes, Hammer mode will allow players to build anything they wish without requiring the necessary resources, monsters will not attack players unless provoked, and the forest will not move to raid player bases.
While Valheim players have been able to add certain modifiers to their games like God mode and free-flying through console commands, that may not be necessary with this public test realm change. Beyond Hammer mode which has otherwise normal settings, a casual mode has been introduced to the Valheim public test server which will drastically reduce the difficulty level in Iron Gate's Viking survival game. The immersive mode, meanwhile, has been made for the more hardcore Valheim fans, and it removes the map and portals, with other difficulty options seeing their own adjustments as well.
Given that the Minecraft and No Man's Sky creative modes have been so popular and have resulted in some incredible creations, Valheim may see the same with its Hammer mode. Because Valheim continues to be patched as Iron Gate Studios slowly transitions it from early access to a full release, more updates may release that entice players to try it for the first time.
Valheim is available now in early access for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
