Players entering Korok Forest for the first time can reach it by traveling to the coordinates 0436, 2095, -0588 in The Depths. Near the Rikonasum Lightroot in Korok Grove, players will find a large stone structure that they can use to ascend directly into the forest.
Within Korok Forest, players will find the Great Deku Tree and all the Koroks silent and unable to move. In a mission reminiscent of Ocarina of Time, players must venture into the Great Deku Tree and destroy the evil that has taken root.
How to Heal the Great Deku Tree in TotK
Players can enter the Great Deku Tree through its "naval" at the base of its trunk and find a small homely interior just as they could in Breath of the Wild.
In the back of this area, however, players will find the Deku Tree Chasm descending back down into The Depths along the length of the tree's roots.
At the bottom of the chasm covered in Gloom, a Gloom Spawn awaits to fight Link. This area is quite cramped, so players are recommended to ascend to one of the higher platforms on the wall if they need to put a bit of space between them and the many hands.
After dispatching all the Gloom Spawn, Phantom Ganon will emerge from the Gloom. It will attempt to close the distance between it and Link at any opportunity and is capable of inflicting major Gloom Damage. Players can use meals and elixirs that resist or heal Gloom Damage to make the fight a bit easier.
If players are victorious in their battle, the Gloom will dissipate from within the Great Deku Tree and a group of Koroks will descend to thank Link for his heroism. Players can then use Ascend to return to the surface and find a rejuvenated Korok Forest.
Recovering the Hero's Sword Main Quest
After healing the Great Deku Tree, players will once again be able to interact with the denizens of Korok Forest and explore the surrounding area.
If they have previously met Hestu, players will also find that he has permanently relocated to Korok Forest now that the Gloom is gone.
A few of the Koroks in the forest will thank Link and direct him toward the Great Deku Tree. By climbing up one of his roots to a small platform, players can speak to him and finally unlock Memory 01. If players have not yet acquired the Master Sword, they will also be presented with the start of the "Recovering the Hero's Sword" main quest.
While the memory is not required to enjoy the game, it does provide greater context and clarity for some of the game's plot points later on. In addition, "Recovering the Hero's Sword" is only one of a few methods to find the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom, so it's possible that players may even complete the game without ever encountering this memory.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.
