You Can Now Play Persona 5 Royal With a Female Protagonist
Fans can now play through Persona 5 Royal with a brand-new mod that gives the game a female version of Joker. Last year, Persona 5 Royal was ported to multiple platforms, including the likes of the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Game Pass, and PC. With a fanbase as active as this one, it's likely no surprise that there's a dedicated Persona modding community for the vanilla and Royal re-releases of P5.
There's been plenty of Persona 5 Royal mods on PC, with some being new costumes for characters, reworked or even new Personas, and other aesthetic or mechanical changes. One big mod that has been in the works for a while is a mod that gives the game a female protagonist. This was created by modder Chlorophylls, who had first posted WIP videos about the mod in 2019, running off the vanilla version of the game. Once they saw Royal was ported to PC, they moved work to that version instead. After several years of work, the first version of the female protagonist mod is now available for download.

This first build was released on GameBanana, with screenshots of what a female version of Persona protagonist Joker looked like. The most obvious is Joker's new costume, which has been fitted with a rose on her lapel. Her hair is also now much longer, reusing the wig cosmetic from Joker's Punishment Cop Outfit from the dancing spin-off game, which is tied up in a small knot in certain costumes. Joker's variety of outfits were also showcased, such as her now sporting the female Shujin School Uniform and a maid outfit.
There are a number of other changes that reflect the protagonist's new gender. This includes new loading screen sprites, in-battle graphics, social stat labels, and even limitations on the equipment she can wear. Joker's voice clips were also swapped out in both languages as well. If the game is played in Japanese, Joker will be voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, who previously voiced Persona 3's Aigis, reusing several voice clips that corresponded to past summonable Personas. In English, she's played by Alexa Farron/VentyWenty, who dubbed over several of Joker's lines, incidental or otherwise. Farron thanked the modder for casting her, as she considered being a voice actor for Joker to be a "dream come true."
The romance options in Persona 5 have also been altered with this mod, where there are four male and four female options. On the male side, players can pursue a relationship with Ryuji, Yusuke, Mishima, or Akechi, with Haru, Hifumi, Takemi, and Ann being romanceable as well. According to Chlorophylls, there are limitations that only allow a certain amount of Confidant slots, meaning some romance routes from the original are cut, like Kasumi's. The full list of changes and FAQs can be found on the GameBanana page.
Persona 5 Royal is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
