Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 5, Nationals 1 - May 1, 2023

I could start with a sardonic quip about how the Cubs actually scored more runs in Saturday’s loss than they scored in tonight’s win, and therefore you shouldn’t look at tonight as some kind of bounce back, it was just about having a real starting pitcher available. BUT I WON’T! BOUNCE BACK WIN!

No, but seriously, it was good to see the Cubs suffer no ill-effects from the weekend sweep in Miami (I didn’t suspect they would), and put together a solid, comfortable win over a very beatable Nationals team.

Drew Smyly was fantastic once again, allowing the one solo homer and otherwise never really being in considerable danger. The Nationals lineup is not terribly imposing at the moment, but they are still MLB players. You have to take care of business and execute your pitches. Smyly did.

Cubs got homers from Dansby Swanson and Ian Happ, and timely hits from Seiya Suzuki and Trey Mancini. Just a good night all around.

One more thing …

Full box score.
