MSI AM5 BIOS Adds CPU Voltage Restrictions For AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs After First Case of CPU Burning Up
MSI has just released a new BIOS for its AM5 motherboards that adds voltage restrictions for the AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs.
MSI Acts Swiftly & Offers Latest AM5 BIOS That Adds Voltage Restriction On Its Boards For AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs
Recently, there have been several reports of ASUS's motherboard burning up and killing the AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs due to older BIOS which didn't add the required voltage restrictions. MSI is now the first motherboard maker to officially announce if latest AM5 BIOS that adds the specific voltage and power restrictions on the AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPU lineup.
While AMD did open some tuning features for its Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs such as PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) and Curve Optimizer, the more hardcore tuning options such as the manual voltage and frequency adjustments were locked out. It looks like some older AM5 motherboard BIOS didn't implement these restrictions well enough and the ASUS motherboard became the prime example of chips burning out and being damaged permanently.
MSI has now placed voltage restrictions in both the BIOS and the MSI Center application. With the latest BIOS, the AM5 motherboards only support negative offset voltage settings on AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs which means that the voltage can only be reduced versus the stock settings & can no longer be increased as that option is now hard-locked. This is to ensure that the CPU doesn't get damaged due to overvoltage.
MSI also recently introduced its brand new Enhanced Mode Boost profile for AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs which adds more performance while reducing temps and power usage. We covered more on this here. The following motherboards are listed alongside their respective BIOS which can now be downloaded and installed on your MSI AM5 motherboard:

It doesn't look like 7800X3D only, it's all 7000X3D They updated the BIOS support for the 7000X3D from all to 1101 https://t.co/45rMJ2J7JZ pic.twitter.com/X2e1G2nVoz — HXL (@9550pro) April 22, 2023
ASUS has also deleted links to all older BIOS releases for its AM5 lineup following the reports of the AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs burning up. Only the latest BIOS is now available on their motherboards plus we can also expect other manufacturers to release their own voltage-restrictive BIOS in the coming days.
