Capcom released a legitimately broken Street Fighter 6 character right before Evo
We're now fewer than two weeks out from EVO 2023 and Capcom just released their first DLC character, Rashid, into Street Fighter 6. Almost immediately after getting hands on the game's 19th character did the community discover a game-breaking bug that gives him insane advantages.
Catalyst, DreamKing, and I offer some of our initial reactions and analysis of Rashid here in his first day in the wild, as well as offer our thoughts on Capcom seemingly backsliding into the kinds of development standards we had hoped were left behind in days of Street Fighter 5.
Those in the Street Fighter community who chose to sleep woke up to tech from those who stood up all night to dig into the newcomer. When Rashid activates his Super 2, Ysaar, which summons a massive, multi-hitting tornado onto the screen, quickly found that he can manipulate the move to not dissipate as intended.
Rashid must perform his new Arabian Cyclone technique to speed up Ysaar. From there, if Rashid cancels Arabian Cyclone with Wing Stroke or Rolling Assault and simply walks forward, the tornado will continually chip the opponent until they Drive Reversal or get hit.
Should Rashid's foe be in burnout and this happen, they'll simply take chip damage until burnout ends or they get knocked out. To their credit, Capcom has already noted on Twitter that they're looking into this bug, but have yet to announce a plan or schedule for fixing it.
Many already had trepidation about the fact that Rashid, a problematic character when it came to gameplay balance for the majority of Street Fighter 5's lifespan, would be released fewer than two weeks before the biggest competitive fighting game event of the year.
As such, Capcom already had a tall order in front of them in producing a version of this character that quickly played nice with others.
Whether Rashid's intended abilities will be balanced enough not to detract from the competition at EVO is still a legitimate concern as we see plenty of what looks to be incredibly powerful tech emerging here on day one, but that's all already secondary to the issue with Ysaar.
One has to suppose that either a fix will be implemented or EVO organizers will ban the character outright, but this is not a good look for Capcom as they call upon SF6 players to fork over extra cash to bring in a character that's breaking the game right before EVO.
Check out the full episode of Talk and Block below as we discuss these issues in more details, offer plenty of examples of the character's seemingly strong abilities, and consider how things might shake out moving forward.
